Lameness problems in sows

The sows will be able to move more than when kept in cages so the fact of having strong extremities is becoming even more important. Currently lameness in sows is already a great problem on many farms which can certainly worsen in group keeping .
Grid floor is not ideal for animals' limbs although it minimizes the labour required on a farm.
In case of sows, lameness increases considerably the production cost.

There are some useful tips to prevent lameness:

  1. Floor: a straw flooring would be ideal, with a good quality slat
  2. Nutrition system
  3. Hoof cut
  4. Foot baths
  5. Vitamins: to ensure a good biotin level
  6. Minerals
